What is red eye syndrome?

"Red eye syndrome" describes a condition in which irritation or damage to the mucous membrane of the eye can occur for a variety of reasons. The redness of the mucous membrane of the eye, the sclera, is caused by inflammation and hemorrhage of the blood vessels in it.

Redness of the eye can occur in one or both eyes; it can start suddenly or gradually. Other symptoms often develop along with red eyes:

• Eye pain
• Itchy eyelids
• Tearing or purulent discharge from the eye
• Swelling and redness of the eyelids
• Blurred vision and more

Causes of red eye syndrome

There are many causes of eye redness:

• Allergy
• Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids)
• Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye lining)
• Dry eye
• Mechanical irritation or damage
• Glaucoma and others

Depending on what causes the redness of the eyes, the patient's complaints vary:

• Sometimes there are no complaints at all
• Itching and irritation may occur.
• Pain and feeling of pressure
• Tearing or blurred vision

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the red eyes. If the redness of the mucous membrane is accompanied by other symptoms that last more than a week, it is best to consult a specialist.

When to see a doctor?

Red eye syndrome usually resolves on its own within a few days, however, there are warning signs that require specialist attention, including:

• Sensation of eyeball softening
• Deterioration of vision
• Increased sensitivity to light
• Prolongation of the condition for more than 1 week
• Increased mucus or pus discharge
• Pain and swelling in the eye or eye socket area
• Fever and more
