General Information

Valproic acid is an epilepsy medication used to treat simple and complex absence seizures, as well as generalized seizures with absences, in combination with other medications.

The average daily dose of valproic acid is 15-60 mg/kg.

During treatment, side effects such as liver dysfunction, Reye's syndrome (a rare disease characterized by damage to brain and liver tissue), and others may occur.

If the patient is pregnant or planning to become pregnant, valproate should be discontinued and replaced with another medication. Valproate causes fetal developmental abnormalities in pregnant women.

The main side effects occur when serum drug concentrations reach >125 mg/mL, which include central nervous system depression, liver failure, and thrombocytopenia.

How to prepare for the test?

• The study is conducted on an empty stomach, 8-12 hours after the last meal.
• The treating physician will advise whether the patient should stop taking the medication before the test.
