Tacrolimus is a macrolide antibiotic with a mechanism of action similar to cyclosporine, but with a more potent effect. The medication is used in organ transplantation to prevent graft rejection.
Tacrolimus is metabolized in the liver by the enzyme cytochrome P3A4. CYP3A4 is an important enzyme involved in drug metabolism. It is inhibited (blocked) by: calcium channel blockers, antifungal agents, some antibiotics. Rifampicin and some anticonvulsants increase the enzymatic activity of cytochrome P3A4.
Material for examination: Since 90% of tacrolimus is found in cellular components of blood, the test material is whole blood.
Reference limits: 3-20 ng/l
The test sample should be collected no earlier than 5 days after the last dose of the medication.
