Antiphospholipid syndrome is an autoimmune disease whose clinical manifestations are associated with arterial and venous thrombosis, spontaneous abortions, rash, chronic headaches, dementia, seizures, and more.
The profile includes the following settings:
Anticardiolipin antibodies are one of a group of antiphospholipid antibodies. Antiphospholipid syndrome is characterized by a wide variety of symptoms. Antiphospholipid antibodies are also found in some infections and neoplastic diseases. In phospholipid syndrome, anticardiolipin antibodies are often associated with B2-glycoprotein-1 autoantibodies. Anticardiolipin antibodies are represented by IgM, IgG, and IgA classes. IgG is the most common form.
Lupus anticoagulants are mainly class M and G autoantibodies that bind to negatively charged phospholipid binding proteins, prothrombin, and beta2-glycoprotein 1. Lupus anticoagulant prolongs coagulation time and ultimately causes thrombus formation.
Beta-2 glycoprotein 1 autoantibodies also belong to the antiphospholipid antibodies, which are mistakenly directed against the lipid-protein structures of the membranes of one's own cells (including platelets). This study, along with other antiphospholipid antibodies (anticardiolipin antibodies and lupus anticoagulant antibodies), is performed to diagnose antiphospholipid syndrome.
When should we take the test?
In a study of primary antiphospholipid syndrome
In systemic lupus erythematosus and thrombotic complications of other connective tissue pathologies
during neurological pathologies
During thrombosis associated with pregnancy and spontaneous abortions
In unexplained thrombocytopenia
