General Information

Sodium is excreted from the body mainly by the kidneys. Renal excretion of Na+ is influenced by changes in glomerular filtration rate, serum Na+ concentration, adrenocortical activity, amount of nonabsorbable substances in the filtrate, and extracellular fluid volume. Each of these five parameters affects the amount of Na+ filtered or reabsorbed differently. The amount of Na+ that appears in the urine is the difference between the amount filtered by the glomerulus and the amount reabsorbed in the tubular lumen. Urinary excretion of Na+ is usually only 1% of the filtered amount.

When should we take the test?

  • Violations of water-saline and acid-alkaline balance
  • Kidney and adrenal gland pathologies
  • Hypovolemia
  • Acute renal failure
  • Differential diagnostics of hyponatremia
  • Nephrolithiasis

Possible interpretation of the results

An increase in the concentration of sodium in the urine is observed in such pathologies as:

  • Kidney diseases
  • Diuretics, osmotic diuresis and the post-obstruction period
  • Increased sodium intake;
  • Cushing's syndrome
  • Primary hyperaldosteronism
  • Nephropathy with salt wasting

A decrease in sodium concentration in urine is observed:

  • Profuse sweating
  • during diarrhea
