Vitamin B6 is an important component in the digestion process of carbohydrates, amino acids and fats. It is also important for the proper functioning of the nervous system, for the renewal processes of the skin and blood-shaped elements, and for the immune system.
Because vitamin B6 is a part of many foods, its deficiency is quite rare, although diseases that damage the small intestine, some autoimmune diseases, alcohol, anti-epileptics and other medications can cause vitamin B6 deficiency. Deficiency of group B vitamins is the cause of anemia, because the process of erythrocyte formation is disturbed. Depression and immune system problems also develop.
Vitamin B6 deficiency is usually associated with deficiency of other B vitamins, eg B9 (folic acid) and B12.
The recommended daily allowance of vitamin B6 for adults is 1.3-1,5 mg per day on average.
