General Information

Human parainfluenza virus is a single-stranded RNA virus that belongs to the paramyxovirus family. It is classified into 4 serological types – HPIV-1, HPIV-2, HPIV-3 and HPIV-4.

The clinical picture of the course of the disease determines which serotype research is required.

  1. HPIV-1: serotype 1 – mainly causes cold symptoms and croup (swelling of the airways and difficulty breathing).
  2. HPIV-2: serotype 2 – mainly causes cold symptoms and croup (swelling of the airways and difficulty breathing).
  3. HPIV-3: serotype 3 – infects the lower respiratory tract – causes bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

Parainfluenza virus is a common cause of respiratory infections in children and adults, which causes various clinical manifestations, such as: cold, croup, bronchiolitis, pneumonia.

After passing the infection, strong immunity is not formed, so there is a possibility of re-infection. The recurrent process is of moderate severity and is often self-limiting without treatment.

In immunocompromised patients, the elderly, or children under 5 years of age, the infection may progress, leading to life-threatening consequences in such patients. The parainfluenza virus causes inflammation of both the upper and lower respiratory tract. It is one of the common causes of death.

The virus is spread by airborne droplets - through droplets of saliva, sneezing and coughing of an infected person or direct contact with contaminated surfaces and objects.
