General Information

Elastase is a proteolytic enzyme produced by the exocrine tissue of the pancreas. During the test, the amount of elastase in the blood is determined to assess how well a person's pancreas is functioning.

The pancreas is located in the abdominal cavity and consists of two types - exocrine and endocrine tissue. The exocrine pancreas is responsible for the production of elastase along with other enzymes that are transported in the small intestine to break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates as part of digestion.

The test determines the level of elastase 1 to diagnose/rule out an inflammatory episode of acute pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis 2.

When should we take the test?

  • diagnostics/exclusion of acute pancreatitis;
  • diagnostics/exclusion of inflammatory process of chronic pancreatitis;
  • monitoring the development of acute pancreatitis;
  • For the diagnostics of pancreatitis caused by gallstones or retrograde endoscopic cholangiopancreatography (ERCF).
