General Information

Stool analysis for occult bleeding is performed to detect occult bleeding from different parts of the gastrointestinal tract.

Such bleeding is one of the early symptoms of serious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including oncology. Even with long-standing occult bleeding, seeing blood in the stool both visually and microscopically is very difficult and often impossible.

When should we take the test?

  • during abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea and vomiting;
  • in case of frequent action of the stomach with mushy masses, constipation, abdominal pain, weight loss, loss of appetite, increase in body temperature;
  • when detecting a tumor of the gastrointestinal tract by instrumental methods, in order to exclude hidden bleeding;
  • when detecting helminths, to assess damage to the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • If the patient has been diagnosed with an ulcer disease (non-specific ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, polyposis, intestinal tuberculosis).

For the diagnostics of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, which are accompanied by a violation of the integrity of the mucous membrane (ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum, primary and metastatic tumors of the esophagus, stomach, large and small intestine, intestinal tuberculosis, non-specific ulcerative colitis, helminthiasis).

  • to assess the degree of damage to the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • to assess the adequacy of therapy for gastrointestinal diseases;
  • To assess the severity and prognosis of gastrointestinal tract disease.

Possible interpretation of the results

Positive Result:

  • A fecal occult blood test is considered positive if blood is detected in the stool samples. You may need further tests, such as a colonoscopy, to determine the source of the bleeding.

Negative Result:

  • A fecal occult blood test is considered negative if no blood is found in the stool samples. If you have an average risk of colon cancer, your doctor may recommend getting tested every year.

Additional information

During a significant amount of bleeding from different parts of the gastrointestinal tract, the color of the feces changes so much that it can be seen visually. If the bleeding is from the lower part of the intestine (colon, rectum), the blood is scarlet, in the form of a clot or an admixture. If the source of bleeding is from the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract (small intestine, esophagus, stomach), the color of the feces becomes black, tarry, due to the reaction between the blood and special enzymes produced in the given part of the gastrointestinal tract.

The detection of hidden blood indicates diseases of the gastrointestinal tract that violate the integrity of the mucous membrane, during which a small amount of blood is released into the lumen of the stomach or intestine. It can be in case of gastric and duodenal ulcer, non-specific colitis, Crohn's disease, polyp, helminth infestation.

Blood can get into the feces during bleeding from the nose, gums, throat, varicose veins of the esophagus, erosive esophagitis, hemorrhoids and other diseases, which should be taken into account when evaluating the results of the analysis.

How Get ready For the test?

  • exclude meat, fish, green vegetables, tomatoes from the diet for 72 hours before the examination;
  • Within 72 hours before the study, you can't take any drugs, make rectal suppositories, limit the intake of medicines (iron, bismuth) affecting intestinal peristalsis and coloration of feces;
