What is albumin?

Albumin is an important protein of the human body, which is used in growth and renewal processes. "Leakage" of albumin in the urine can be found in the case of kidney failure.

What is a urine microalbumin test?

The urine microalbumin test measures the minimal or "micro" amount of albumin in the urine, which is so small that it cannot be detected by conventional analysis. This may indicate kidney damage.

When is the microalbumin test performed?

• Type 1 diabetes
• Type 2 diabetes
• High blood pressure
• In patients of the risk group of heart and kidney diseases over 65 years of age
• In people with a family history of kidney damage

A urine microalbumin test reveals possible kidney damage at an early stage of the disease.

Referral norms

Norm: less than 30 mg

Microalbuminuria: 30-300 mg

Clinical albuminuria: more than 300 mg
