General Information

Measles virus is a member of the paramyxovirus family of single-stranded RNA, along with respiratory syncytial virus and parainfluenza virus.

The virus spreads from the infected person through air-droplet. The incubation period includes 10-14 days.

The clinical picture is characterized by a prodromal period, which is characterized by high fever, cough, rhinitis, general symptoms of infection and whitish plaque on the cheek mucosa. This is followed by a maculo-papular (spotted-nodular) rash, which in the first stage develops in the forehead and behind the ears and spreads in the direction of the chest.

During the recovery phase, all areas of the skin, except for the cores of the hands and feet, peel off, which lasts an average of 5 days. In case of complications, the symptoms last no more than 10 days. Cough is the last to go away.

Measles is an actively contagious disease. Pregnant women, people with immunodeficiency and malnutrition have a particularly high risk of developing complications such as: pneumonia, infectious diseases of the central nervous system - encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, Guillain Barre syndrome, hemiplegia and retrobulbar neuritis.

Unlike rubella, measles does not have a teratogenic effect in pregnant women, does not cause congenital pathologies of the fetus. However, it can cause premature termination of pregnancy or premature birth.

Pneumonia accompanying measles develops directly from the measles virus or as a result of bacterial complications.

Diagnosis

Laboratory diagnostics of measles is based on serological studies. In 1-2 days after the development of discharge, specific IgM antibodies appear, the level of which increases significantly in 10 days and remains for 1 month. IgG antibodies remain in the blood permanently.

When is the survey conducted?

  • Laboratory diagnostics of the disease
  • Exposure to a non-immunized patient

Preparation of the patient: The study is conducted on an empty stomach

Material for examination: Venous blood

Referral norms

Specific IgG AU/ml

<13.5 – negative
13.5-16.5 – ambiguous
> 16.5 - positive

Specific IgM AU/ml

<0.9 – negative
0.9-1.1 – ambiguous
> 1.1 – positive

Interpretation of results

Negative antibody readings indicate the absence of the virus.
