Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is an independent inflammatory biomarker for assessing cardiovascular risk. Phospholipase A2 is a calcium-independent serine lipase synthesized directly in macrophages. The majority of it circulates in the blood bound to low-density lipoproteins (LDL ~80%), and a small portion – together with high-density lipoproteins (HDL ~20%).
Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 can degrade platelet-activating factor (PAF), thereby preventing platelet aggregation and thrombus formation. It also participates in biochemical processes that result in the formation of lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) and oxidized free fatty acids.
