General Information

Leptospira | Antibody test

Used to diagnose leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection that spreads from animals to humans and is characterized by fever, myositis, hepatorenal involvement, and sometimes meningitis.

Leptospirosis infects both wild and domestic animals. Humans are infected through contact with the urine and tissues of an infected animal, or by drinking water contaminated with leptospirosis. Leptospirosis can also enter the body through broken skin and mucous membranes. In mild cases, leptospirosis is characterized by a flu-like course, which resolves in 2-3 weeks. In severe cases, a severe infectious disease of one or another system may develop. In a very small number of patients, severe hemorrhages in the organs and liver-kidney failure (Weil's disease) occur.

Serological tests allow for the diagnostics of the disease. Antibodies develop in the second week of the illness.

When should we take the test?

During clinical symptoms – When the patient has fever, myositis, headache, conjunctivitis, liver or kidney dysfunction
At epidemiological risk – After being in water or a damp environment, especially if there was contact with infected animals (rodents, dogs, livestock)
At occupational risk – Veterinarians, farmers, military, water sports enthusiasts
In noteworthy cases – When other tests (e.g., PCR) indicate the possibility of infection, or additional confirmation is needed
When determining the stage of infection – IgM antibodies in the early stages, IgG in later or past infection

Possible interpretation of the results

Cross-reactivity with other bacteria may exist, so results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical data. The results of the study are considered in conjunction with other laboratory data and the clinical picture.
