HER2 – Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 is a marker that determines the subtype of breast cancer (along with estrogen and progesterone receptors ER and PR).
The presence or absence of HER2 (along with ER and PR) determines the aggressiveness of the tumor and is used to select the right treatment.
HER2 is a protein located on the surface of breast cells that ensures the processes of cell growth and renewal - it participates in the replacement of damaged cells with new ones. However, when the HER2 gene is mutated, the function of the protein it synthesizes is disrupted and the cells grow and multiply uncontrollably, which ultimately results in the formation of a tumor. Bottom of Form
HER15-positive tumors account for 20-2% of breast cancer cases. This form of cancer is aggressive and fast-growing, but can be successfully treated if detected early.
HER2 – Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-2 status is determined as HER2-positive or HER2-negative, which allows for specific treatment options.
