Hepatitis C virus RNA assay (PCR)

General Information

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a member of the flavivirus family and is transmitted intravenously and sexually. Acute hepatitis caused by the virus is often asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and progresses to chronic form in 60-90% of cases.

The PCR method can detect viral RNA in the blood (viremia), which is used both to diagnose the disease and to assess the progression of the condition and the effect of treatment.

Research material  – Venous blood

Reference boundaries

Quantitative PCR of hepatitis C virus RNA. In the norm, viral RNA will not be detected.

Interpretation of results

A positive PCR (quantitative) test result indicates the presence of the virus.
