Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) Is hemoglobin in which the glucose molecule condenses with the β-terminal valine (amino acid) of the β-chain of the hemoglobin molecule. Glycosylated hemoglobin represents a small percentage of hemoglobin (5-7%). It is the result of continuous and irreversible binding of glucose from the blood throughout the life of erythrocytes (approximately 100-120 days). Glycosylation occurs in two stages, through non-enzymatic reactions, depending on the level of glucose in the blood. The increase in glycated hemoglobin level is proportional to the average blood glucose concentration in the last 2-3 months before testing; Its level in the blood normalizes 4-6 weeks after the onset of euglycemia.
No specific training is required.
It is recommended to limit alcohol intake, smoking and strenuous physical activity for at least 12 hours before the test.
Increase in glycated hemoglobin concentration:
Decreased glycated hemoglobin concentration:
The HbA1C test is used for screening, diagnostics, and long-term monitoring of glucose levels in patients with diabetes. It also plays a prognostic role in determining the risk of macro- and microvascular complications of diabetes.
Since 2010, a recommendation from the ADA (American Diabetes Association) has been used to diagnose glycated hemoglobin HbA1c with a threshold value of 6,5% or more for the diagnostics of diabetes.
Advantages of studying glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) for the diagnostics of diabetes and prediabetes:
