The term fructosamine reflects the glycosylation of whey protein, i.e. the binding of serum glucose to whey protein, as a result of increased glucose concentration.
Fructosamine is the result of nonenzymatic binding (glycosylation) of glucose to nitrogenous groups of free serum proteins, especially albumin. When serum glucose levels are persistently elevated, as in diabetes mellitus, increased glycosylation of serum proteins occurs, which also leads to increased fructosamine levels.
Serum fructosamine determination is used to detect hyperglycemia (elevated blood glucose levels) of unknown genesis, confirm the diagnostics of diabetes, and monitor antidiabetic treatment.
Serum fructosamine levels are not affected by stress. Elevated fructosamine levels may also be associated with hyperadrenocorticism - an excess of adrenal hormones, such as in Cushing's syndrome.
When is the survey conducted?
To assess the average glycemic index over a long period of time.
Preparation of the patient: The study is conducted on an empty stomach
Research material - Venous blood
Interpretation of results
The fructosamine level reflects the glycemic index of a patient with diabetes over the past 2-3 weeks. An increase in the level indicates insufficient control.
