How is research conducted?
To carry out a bacteriological study of cerebrospinal fluid, a puncture is performed between the lumbar vertebrae and the cerebrospinal fluid is taken from the canal of the spinal cord through a sessile needle. The procedure is performed only in a hospital by a specialist. The duration of the procedure is several minutes.
Bacteriological examination of cerebrospinal fluid is necessary in such diseases as:
Viral and bacterial meningitis
Fungal infections
Subarachnoid hemorrhage of the brain
Head and spinal cord injury
Epilepsy
multiple sclerosis
Lyme disease
Guillain-Barré syndrome and others
The sample sent to the laboratory undergoes a cultural study. If necessary, a study on sensitivity to antibiotics is done - antibioticogram.
Along with the bacteriological study of cerebrospinal fluid, sometimes additional studies are needed, such as: blood bacteriology, general blood analysis and others. If no causative agents were observed in the culture, i.e. there is no infectious process in the CNS.
Research material: CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)
Response time: 4 working days
It does not require special preparation
What is cerebrospinal fluid culture (bacteriology)?
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, protects it from mechanical damage, supplies necessary substances and removes products produced by animal activities.
During infectious processes of the central nervous system (CNS), it becomes necessary to carry out a bacteriological study of the liquor, to identify the exact cause and determine the course of treatment.
