CA 50 carbohydrate antigen is a ganglioside glycoprotein found on the surface of some cell membranes and is used as a tumor marker. It is found in various types of tumors and is not characterized by organ specificity, but is most characteristic of tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. In pancreatic tumors, the specificity and sensitivity of CA 50 carbohydrate antigen are 77% and 69%, respectively. In liver tumors, the sensitivity of CA 50 (55%) is much higher than that of CA 19-9 (9%).
An elevated level of CA 50 carbohydrate antigen also characterizes endometrial carcinomas.
Preparation of the patient:no need
Study sample:Venous blood
Moderate elevations of CA 50 carbohydrate antigen are sometimes observed in benign diseases of the liver and biliary tract.

Non-cancerous conditions:
CA 50 — Carbohydrate Carcinoembryonic Antigen is used as an additional tumor marker, especially in pancreatic, gastrointestinal, and lung tumors, although its specificity is low.
