General Information

Brucella is a gram-negative coccobacillus. It causes brucellosis, a zoonotic disease that is transmitted from animals to humans. Brucella infects cattle, dogs, and others. The species B. melitensis, B. abortus, and B. suis also infect humans.

Human brucellosis is a systemic infectious disease characterized by:

  • Acute stage of bacteremia
  • Localization of infection in the organ
  • Inactive hidden forms

The acute stage occurs with the usual symptoms of infection and lasts 2-4 weeks.

Chronic brucellosis develops with the pathogen's metastasis to a specific organ, such as the bone marrow, spleen, liver, kidneys, or brain.

Sometimes abscesses form in these organs.

The production of IgM antibodies begins in the first week of the disease, followed by IgG antibodies from the second week. During the recovery process, the concentration of antibodies slowly decreases. (Antibodies completely disappear 2-3 years after the transfer). The presence of an increased concentration of IgG antibodies over a long period of time indicates a chronic form of the disease.
