General Information

Anti-U1-ribonucleoprotein antibodies (Anti-U1RNP) They are autoantibodies directed against the U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (U1-snRNP) complex in the cell nucleus. Their detection plays an important role in the diagnostics of autoimmune connective tissue diseases.

Anti-U1-ribonucleoprotein antibodies U1RNP

Anti-U1 ribonucleoprotein antibodies (anti-U1-RNP) are autoantibodies to the nuclear antigen characteristic of connective tissue diseases.

Anti-U1 ribonucleoprotein antibodies interact with the antigen - small nuclear riboprotein particles, they differ from SM (Smith) antibodies.

Both types of antibodies are determined through a single test system. Unlike Smith antibodies, anti-U1-RNP antibodies are not found in systemic lupus erythematosus. It is more typical in mixed connective tissue disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, and inflammatory myositis.

Clinical significance:

  • Most associated with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD) And it is one of its main serological markers.
  • It may also appear:
    • Systemic Lupus ErythematosusDuring;
    • Systemic SclerosisDuring;
    • In cases of other autoimmune connective tissue diseases and overlap syndromes

When should we take the test?

  • Raynaud's phenomenon (whitening/tingling of fingers and toes in cold weather)
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Muscle weakness and pain
  • In the presence of symptoms suspicious of an autoimmune disease
  • Positive ANA test for further diagnostic evaluation

Possible interpretation of the results

In mixed connective tissue disease, anti-U1-RNP antibody titers are positive, and Smith (SM) and double-stranded-DNA (DS-DNA) antibodies are negative.

Reference values

Anti-U1RNP antibodies It is an important serological marker in the diagnostics of mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and other autoimmune diseases. The study helps the doctor detect the autoimmune process and make an early assessment of the disease.
