Lupus anticoagulant is one of the antiphospholipid antibodies, which also include anticardiolipin antibodies and anti-beta2-glycoprotein 1 antibodies. Phospholipids are the constituent complexes of the cell membrane.
Anti-Mglura anticoagulants are heterogeneous antibodies of the IgM and IgG class directed against the protein-phospholipid complex of the cell membrane.
Lupus anticoagulant prevents and prolongs the blood clotting process, which is a risk of arterial and venous thrombosis and causes such diseases as: stroke, transient ischemic attack, acquired thrombophilia, termination of pregnancy.
The presence of lupus anticoagulant may be transient and also present in asymptomatic patients. Its research is necessary in hypercoagulable state and antiphospholipid syndrome.
The risk of thrombosis with lupus anticoagulant is much higher than with anti-cardiolipin and anti-beta2-glycoprotein 1 antibodies. The development of these autoantibodies may be spontaneous in the background of infections, treatment with certain drugs, or the presence of autoimmune diseases.
Lupus anticoagulants are mainly class M and G autoantibodies that bind to negatively charged phospholipid binding proteins, prothrombin and beta2-glycoprotein 1. Lupus anticoagulant prolongs clotting time and eventually leads to clot formation.
When is the test conducted?
When antiphospholipid syndrome is suspected, along with lupus anticoagulant antibodies, beta2-glycoprotein 1 and anticardiolipin antibodies are also tested.
