General Information

Alternaria alternata is a fungus whose spores are a strong inhalation allergen and environmental pollutant. Alternaria inhabits decaying decomposed surfaces. Its spores are mainly distributed in open spaces, although they can colonize indoors, thus increasing the general allergic background. Alternaria allergens are associated with exacerbation of asthma and respiratory allergic processes.

Alternaria proteins are structures with cross-allergic activity that cause poly-sensitization to other allergenic activity proteins. That is why Alternaria allergens are important risk factors in the development of asthma and other respiratory allergies caused by other molds.

Alternaria allergens cause a specific immunoglobulin IgE-associated allergic reaction. Therefore, the detection of IgE in the blood confirms the allergic process.
