Alpha-fetoprotein is a tumor marker used to diagnose certain tumors and liver lesions. It is also relevant in pregnant women to detect congenital anomalies in the baby.
Marker determination, in conjunction with ultrasound, is a screening tool for the diagnostics of hepatocellular carcinoma. This test alone is not a diagnostic criterion. It must be used in combination with other studies to obtain a complete picture.
