Alpha-1-antitrypsin is a protein synthesized in the liver, which blocks protease enzymes (enzymes that break down protein structures) released in human biological fluids as a result of apoptosis (cell death).
At least 3 types of antiprotease are found in serum, the most important of which are alpha-1-antitrypsin and alpha-2-macroglobulin.
Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency is associated with pulmonary emphysema and liver cirrhosis that develop at a young age.
Alpha-1-antitrypsin is an acute phase reactive protein, the increase of which is observed in bacterial infections, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis (inflammatory process of blood vessels) and neoplasias (tissues with uncontrolled growth).
Preparation of the patient:The study is conducted on an empty stomach. If alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency is suspected, C-reactive protein should be determined before testing.
Material for examination:Venous blood
Reference norms:0.9 -2.0 g/l
Important information:<0.7გ/ლA value less than XNUMX may be an early sign of pulmonary emphysema
