General Information

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) - An enzyme of the hydrolase class, which mainly consists of three isoenzyme forms (hepatobiliary, bone, intestinal), which adds to the transient placental form detected during pregnancy.

Alkaline phosphatase catalyzes the secretion of phosphoric acid from its organic compounds; The enzyme is located on the cell membrane and participates in the transport of phosphorus.

When should we take the test?

Diseases of the liver and bile ducts, including those accompanied by obstructive syndrome;
Hyperparathyroidism;

Possible interpretation of the results

Alkaline phosphatase concentration increases:

Bone tissue pathology (deformed osteitis, osteomalacia, Gaussian disease with bone resorption, osteosarcoma, tumor metastases to bone, fracture healing period);

Primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism;

Additional information

Alkaline phosphatase is involved in bone growth-related processes, so its activity in serum in children is higher than in adults. Abnormal increases in serum alkaline phosphatase activity are mainly associated with bone and liver disease. Elevated alkaline phosphatase levels are found in all forms of cholestasis (bile retention in the bile ducts), especially in the case of obstructive forms of jaundice.

In preterm infants, during the period of active growth in children, in pregnant women (third trimester), an increase in the physiological activity of alkaline phosphatase may be observed.
