General Information

Determination of serum hyaluronic acid is recommended to determine the degree of liver fibrosis, fatty liver and other degenerative processes. The study is a prognostic indicator of the disease in liver cirrhosis.

Hyaluronic acid is a component of the extracellular space of the liver. It is synthesized in stellate cells of the liver and degraded in sinusoidal cells. An increase in the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the plasma occurs when the sinusoidal cells are damaged.

The direct correlation between hyaluronic acid concentration and alcoholic liver damage has not been fully studied, however, an increase in hyaluronic acid concentration is characteristic of liver fibrosis and precirrhotic conditions.

Sometimes the reason for the increase in hyaluronic acid concentration is the enhancement of its synthesis in stellate cells, without cirrhosis. Later, when cirrhosis develops, due to sinusoidal cell damage, the process of hyaluronic acid degradation is disrupted, which further increases its concentration in the plasma. According to clinical studies, high levels of plasma hyaluronic acid are associated with complications after cirrhosis.

Under normal conditions, a small amount of hyaluronic acid circulates in the blood serum, however, an increase in its concentration indicates liver tissue damage.
Hyaluronidase is a catabolic enzyme involved in the degradation of hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a necessary specific component of connective tissue, including joint cartilage and synovial membrane, and is a biomarker of joint inflammation and joint inflammation. Its rate is influenced by environmental factors, for example, mixing products (supplements) containing hyaluronic acid with food.
