Myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) is a cell transmembrane molecule found only in myelin-containing cells (neurons). Myelin-associated glycoprotein interacts with receptors, thereby exerting various effects on the cellular cytoskeleton (including the process of phosphorylation of neurofilaments). This protein plays an important role in the formation of myelin and maintaining its structure.
Myelin-associated glycoprotein autoantibodies cause demyelination processes, which lead to sensori-motor neuropathies and polyneuropathies. Polyneuropathies are an ongoing process with damage to peripheral nerve fibers, usually bilateral. Sensory type disorders usually precede motor disorders.
Antibodies to myelin-associated glycoprotein are usually associated with monoclonal with Gampathia.
To diagnose peripheral neuropathies
Preparation of the patient: no need
Material for examination: Venous blood
Referral norm: Negative
Increased concentrations of myelin-associated glycoprotein autoantibodies are observed in demyelinating sensorimotor neuropathies. A moderate increase in autoantibodies is observed in multiple sclerosis and inflammatory neuropathies.
These autoantibodies may rarely be detected in rheumatoid arthritis and other collagen diseases.
