General Information

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein hormone that is normally produced in the placenta during pregnancy. In non-pregnant women, it can be synthesized by trophoblastic tumor cells (molar pregnancy, choriocarcinoma). In addition, in non-pregnant women and men, hCG can be synthesized by the germ cells of tumors with a trophoblastic component (ovaries, testicles) and some non-trophoblastic tumors. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) consists of two different chains: α and β (ie the intact hormone). α subunit consists of 92 amino acids and is identical to pituitary hormones (LH, FSH and TSH). The β subunit (intact), containing 145 amino acids, is specific for HCG;

Because the test has a high sensitivity to β-HCG, there is no risk of cross-reactivity.

When should we take the test?

Pregnancy marker: early diagnostics of pregnancy, determination of gestational age, detection of ectopic (external) pregnancy (with transvaginal ultrasound) and danger of termination of pregnancy (compensatory increase of the specified hormone for activation of corpus luteum and increase in progesterone production)
Tumor marker: detection and monitoring of HCG-producing ovarian, testicular and placental tumors; In the case of testicular tumors, HCG is determined together with AFP

Possible interpretation of the results

Elevated levels of β-HCG may indicate the following:

Pregnancy;
Blistering, blistering recurrence;
Chorionic carcinoma, recurrence of chorionic carcinoma;
Seminole;
Testicular teratoma;
neoplasms: gastrointestinal tract (including colorectal cancer), lungs, kidneys, uterus;
The study was conducted 4-5 days after the abortion was completed;
preparations containing hCG;
Perimenopausal and menopausal age (moderate)

Decreased β-HCG levels may indicate:

Danger of abortion
Ectopic pregnancy
Termination of pregnancy
