Home call service: YesBreast carcinoma is one of the most common forms of breast cancer. These tumors often produce mucinous antigens – high molecular weight glycoproteins. CA 15-3 is a breast tumor-associated antigen encoded by the MUC-1 gene.
CA 15-3 is mainly used to monitor breast cancer treatment in the presence of metastases. Marker research is not conducted in isolation, but its data are considered together with clinical, anamnestic, instrumental-laboratory research data. CA 15-3 is also used for postoperative surveillance of invasive breast cancer.
In addition to breast tumors, serum CA 15-3 levels may be elevated in lung, colon, pancreatic, liver, ovarian, cervical, and endometrial tumors.
The main limitation of the study is the fact that in the early stage of the tumor, the increase of the marker is not observed, therefore it is not used for screening.
Serial testing helps detect recurrence early in previously treated stage II and III breast cancer patients.
Elevated CA 15-3 levels in previously treated women at risk of breast cancer recurrence may predict disease progression.
In breast cancer monitoring, it may indicate disease progression or regression.
Preliminary preparation: A few hours before conducting the study, the intake of food supplements and multivitamins containing biotin (vitamin B7) should be stopped.
