General Information

CA 72-4 (carcinoma antigen) is a tumor marker used in the monitoring of gastrointestinal and gynecological tumors. It is particularly important in the evaluation of gastric cancer and carcinomas of the cervix/uterine body.

SA 72-4

It is a first-line marker for monitoring the treatment and progression of gastric tumors (along with CEA and CA 19-9).

A secondary marker in the monitoring process of mucinous ovarian tumors.

When should we take the test?

When stomach cancer is suspected → Especially in the case of adenocarcinoma
Cervical/corpus carcinoma
Colorectal cancer → Additional, non-specific marker
For treatment monitoring → After chemotherapy and surgery
When a relapse is detected → Dynamic observation

Possible interpretation of the results

High level → May indicate stomach, ovarian, uterine, or colorectal cancer
Low/normal level → Does not rule out cancer because CA 72-4 is not a screening test
Dynamics → More reliable than a single indicator; assesses treatment effectiveness and relapse

Treatment with high doses of biotin (>5 mg/day) affects marker values. Therefore, it is advisable to collect the sample at least 8 hours after the last dose of biotin.
